KINETIC RAIN

Changi Airport Terminal 1, Singapore
in operation since 2012

Client: ART+COM Studios

Kinetic Rain consists of two parts installed in the lively transit space at Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 1. Each symmetrical element is composed of 608 copper-plated aluminium drops connected by steel wires to computer-controlled motors that raise and lower them with precision. The two elements move in dialogue through a fifteen-minute animated sequence. The entire installation spans a total area of more than 75 square metres and spreads over 7.3 metres in height.

The system was engineered for 24/7 operation. The positioning accuracy of the individual axes is extremely precise. The maximum offset between two drops is 0.25 mm. The drops move at a speed of 1.5 m/s. The movement must be dynamic, but at the same time flowing and absolutely jerk-free.
