FLOCKING LIGHTS

Spare Bank Stavanger, Norway
in operation since 2019

Client: ART+COM Studios

A flock of 20 mechatronic elements is in permanent physical and immaterial motion in the atrium of the new Head Quarter of SpareBank. The idea of a scale is represented in a highly abstract form as a kinetic light element which consists out of a 2.5 meter tube with controllable LEDs. It can be very precisely tilted and its light animation is choreographed with the motion symbolizing animations like fluid light, collecting raindrops or flock of birds.

The 20 elements are designed for continuous operation. The movement is silent and very soft in order not to induce vibrations in the suspension. As a moving suspended load above the heads of the visitors, the consideration of several safety aspects was required.
